Northern Territory’s peak music body Music NT has established an industry reference group for Indigenous woman.
Last month Music NT called out for Indigenous women with a range of industry skills and experiences to apply for the new industry reference group. The successful applicants will be announced this Friday.
The group will assist Music NT in planning, coordinating, operating and evaluating its Indigenous Women’s Music Program (IWMP).
The IWMP currently runs two main projects – Sista Sounds, which promotes the inclusion of women and girls in music activities and provides opportunities and workshops for them to engage more with music, and Divas, which provides a range of industry skills and performance opportunities for emerging Indigenous singer songwriters.
The first meeting of the new Reference Group will be held in early August and reoccur approximately every 3 months thereafter.
The move is part of Music NT’s 2017—2020 strategic plan to lift the profile of the Territory’s music and artists and to increase their skills and opportunities so they can compete both nationally and globally.
Music NT’s four key outcome areas are supporting Territory musicians to thrive, supporting the Territory to be recognised for its dynamic music industry, supporting local, national and international audiences to engage with Territory music and to further establish Music NT as a strong and viable organisation.
Some of Music NT’s key achievements in the last three years have included the National Indigenous Music Awards securing a free-to-air television partnership to broadcast the event nationally, the Intune workshop series which brought industry level workshops to musicians and industry workers across the Territory, their highly successful Bush Bands workshop program and NT Song of the Year award, which celebrates the diversity and talent of the Territory music industry.
Last weekend Music NT’s Saltwater Divas program wrapped up with a series of workshops and a dynamic showcase from emerging Indigenous female singer songwriters.
