Build Your Own Arts Business – Free Short Course for Sydney arts professionals

A short course in business skills will be presented by Sydney TAFE, Ultimo College in June. This free program is designed for professional artists in the performing arts – independent dance artists, musicians, actors. It will be presented by experienced industry and training professionals.

The course has been devised with the Creative Arts (ACFIPS) NSW Industry Training Advisory Body, It has been developed in response to industry calls for tailored business training in arts business and marketing.

Build Your Own Arts Business – Free Short Course for arts professionals
Sydney TAFE, Ultimo College from 30 May

 Course Outline – 6 days over 6 weeks

This practical course is divided into 3 x 2 day topic areas, and will be held on Mondays 9am – 4pm.

The first day will explore the course content with time spent getting ready to then meet again the next week to share practical plans and strategies to build your Arts business.

Each topic can be completed independently or you can do all 3 topics. Completion of the course will count towards achieving competencies in the Certificate IV in Business. Assessment will be conducted in class.

The course 3 x 2 day topic areas are:

  1. BUSINESS BASICS:      30 May & 6 June How to get your art business started – the nuts and bolts! Understand how to create your Business Plan.
  2. MARKETING BASICS:  20 June & 27 June   What is arts marketing, what is your product, defining your vision and devising a Marketing Plan. We will also explore the best way to use social media to promote your arts business
  3. CUSTOMERS: 4 July & 11 July  Who are your potential diverse clients, communicating and partnering  with your clients to win business, build trust and business networks Connecting with your community base and strategic partners to sustain your enterprise or project

Upon successful completion of each topic area, you will receive a Statement of Attainment with the following units of competency:


BSBSMB305 – Comply with regulatory, taxation and insurance requirements for the micro business

BSBSMB304 – Determine resource requirements for the micro business

BSBSMB302 – Develop a micro business proposal


BSBSMB403 – Market the small business

BSBSMB307 – Set up information and communications technology for the micro business


BSBCUE203 – Conduct customer engagement

BSBCUS401 – Coordinate implementation of customer service strategies

BSBCUS402 – Address customer needs

    I would be interested in doing this course but one of my regular jobs is during the daytime on Mondays. Will you be running the free course in the future on another day of the week, or can you tell me of other ways in which I could do this course. I especially like the idea of doing the first part of Cert IV in Business with other arts professionals, as we would be able to share our experiences much more closely than with a more mixed group.
