The most essential component of Music: Count Us In is the composition of the program song. This year, our four national finalists were joined by Program Ambassador John Foreman, Program Mentor Marcia Hines and Songwriting expert Tom Diesel. It was a great day of songwriting in Sydney and we had our song in record time.

It was an exciting start to the workshop with our national songwriting finalists, Frank, Tylah, Larissa and Lynn, flying in to Sydney on Tuesday 31 March. For some, it was their first time in Sydney and a thrilling experience!

Wednesday 1 April was a big day. It is no small task for a group of strangers to bare their souls and share their musical creations with others. We began with introductions – it isn’t every day you get to work with the iconic Marcia Hines! After sharing their 2015 Songwriting Competition winning entries, our young songwriters got down to the difficult but exciting task of developing a theme for our 2015 song. After identifying specific lyrics and musical themes from each student’s song, the team decided to jump right in and make a start on the chorus. An hour later, right in time for morning tea – a fantastic chorus was ready to go.

The entire day continued with fantastic creativity from everyone involved. It is amazing to see what can be achieved by dedicated young people when they receive great leadership. Our 2015 songwriting leaders each brought something really important to the songwriting day. Each successful and respected in the music industry, it was a true privilege to have the experience and expertise of John, Marcia and Tom. Their passion for working with young people and helping them express their stories was clearly evident and you will no doubt hear it in this year’s song.

We head to the recording studio in two weeks and then it will soon be time to launch our 2015 Program Song. Be sure to like the Music: Count Us In Facebook page, to look at some Songwriting Workshop photos, and try our cryptic picture clues for some of our 2015 Song lyrics.
