The Four Winds Festival in Bermagui on the south coast of New South Wales has a new artistic leadership team for 2016. Renowned clarinettist Paul Dean, formerly of the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM), and events manager Yarmila Alfonzetti will jointly direct the festival next Easter. Sheena Boughen, Four Winds’ chair, announced: “Our new team, with Paul Dean’s strengths as a musician and Artistic Director along with Yarmila as Executive Producer, bring creativity and innovation to our 18th Festival in 2016 celebrating Australian artists and new music.”
The biennial event takes place in a natural amphitheatre on a 10ha open bushland property that The Sydney Morning Herald’s Harriet Cunningham described as a “ludicrously beautiful piece of paradise”. Leading last year’s program, directed by Paul Kildea, was a piano trio consisting of Richard Tognetti (violin), Dejan Lazic (piano) and Giovanni Sollima (cello).
Four Winds Festival has close ties with ANAM and has developed a series of residencies by ANAM emerging professionals, the most recent of whom were Penny Quartet earlier this year.
The 2016 Festival runs 24-27 March.
