Developers Jinshan Investments commenced interior demolition of Melbourne’s Palace Theatre last week, despite the fact that the City of Melbourne had yet to deliver the results of its heritage review. In response, protestors gathered outside, while, on 20 November, the Council issued a brief statement, indicating that the pursuit of ‘interim heritage protection’ was underway. Jinshan hopes to turn the building, which was erected in 1912, into a seven-storey boutique hotel. On 22 November, the developers responded to criticism with a statement claiming that their actions were lawful and intended to meet safety requirements.
